Senior Advocate Coat

The senior advocate coat is a traditional dress of a lawyer in India. The black robe has symbolic meaning and a high status. It is a staple item in the wardrobe of every senior advocate. There is no special dress code for the office of an advocate; however, some advocates wear a different color robe when necessary. The bar council of India Rule does not specify a specific design for a Senior advocate coat. The practice of wearing a different color robe for senior advocates was maintained even prior to the 1961 Advocacy Act. In this context, the Travancore Devaswom Board case was cited, which was binding on the Bench of two learned Supreme Court of India judges.

Lawyer’s attire

Senior advocates wear a separate gown from other advocates. Unlike ordinary advocates, they are entitled to wear a different gown. The Act does not specifically stipulate a senior advocate coat, and the Bar Council of India rules do not mention it either. There are different dress codes for male and female judges and this rule applies to the senior advocate coat, as well as the standard lawyer’s attire. The law also requires attorneys to have a different dress code than the general public.

Traditional dress

The senior advocate Coat is a traditional dress code for attorneys. The advocate’s coat is often a white color. While other advocates wear a black or blue robe, senior advocates wear a gray or blue robe. The color of the dress is not important – it all depends on the judge. Generally, the color of the gown is the same as the gown colour, so you can mix and match to suit the occasion.
